Clínica Belfort
The Belfort Clinic, located in São Paulo, is one of the oldest and more traditional ophthalmology practices in Brazil. Since 1933 offers gold standard treatment of patients with eye diseases. Clinica Belfort’s differential is to keep the tradition focused on the patient, but with state of the art medical quality.

Prof. Rubens Belfort Jr is the head professor at Escola Paulista de Medicina, the leading ophthalmology department in Latin America. He has been recognized by numerous awards all around the world for his excellence, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology Blindness prevention award and the “Conrado Wessel Award”, the Brazilian Nobel award for medicine.

After 82 years of activity, attendance of more than 200,000 patients and four generations of academic work focused on prevention of blindness, teaching, research and intense philanthropic activity. Prof. Rubens Belfort Neto, fourth generation of ophthalmologists, is also an MD and PhD and an affiliate professor of ophthalmology at Paulista School of Medicine / UNIFESP.

In 2006, for the first time, the International Congress of Ophthalmology (World Ophthalmology Congress) was held in South America and Prof. Rubens Belfort Jr. was its president. It was the largest ophthalmology convention ever held in Latin America and the second largest in the world in number of participants (12,000 ophthalmologists).

In 2014 Dr. Rubens Belfort Jr was the recipient of the prestigious 2014 “International Blindness Prevention Award” from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his work as a doctor and teacher in South America. It is one of the most important ophthalmology award in the world.

Prof Rubens Belfort Neto is the son of Prof Belfort Jr and the fourth generation of ophthalmologists. He is an MD PhD and also an affiliate professor of Ophthalmology at Federal University of São Paulo. His training included fellowships at McGill University in Canada and Cleveland Clinic in the USA. He was the president of the Pan-American Ocular Oncology Society.

Areas of focus and research of Clinical Belfort team include Uveitis, Cataract Surgery, Macula Disease, Retina and Cornea, Glaucoma, Ocular Tumors, Infectious diseases such as toxoplasmosis and herpes, ocular manifestations of systemic diseases such as Cancer and GVHD, Diabetes and Rheumatic Diseases as well as development of new drugs and therapies for ocular diseases.

Both Prof Belfort Jr and Neto have frequent academic and personal contact with ophthalmologists from North America, Central America, Europe and Asia. Our research partnerships include McGill University in Canada, Johns Hopkins, Bascom Palmer and Cleveland Clinic in USA, Coimbra University and Champalimaud Foundation in Portugal, and LV Prasad Eye Center in India, among others.
